The Internet I grew up with was always pretty casual about authentication: as long as you were willing to take some basic steps to prevent abuse (make an account with a pseudonym, or just refrain from spamming), many sites seemed happy to allow somewhat-anonymous usage. However a more recent driver of this change is the push for legal age verification. While most of these laws were designed to tackle pornography, but (as many civil liberties folks warned) adult and adult-ajacent content is on almost any user-driven site.
